My Dearest Nathaniel,

I can hardly believe that you are 4 weeks old already! Where has the time gone? It seems like only yesterday Emma was placing you on my chest for the first time and your Daddy and I were looking down at your tiny little body in complete awe at our baby boy.

img_3988.jpgThis has been an amazing month. Your Daddy and I have grown so much in the past month while we’ve tried to figure out this parenting thing. And you – you have already changed so much! Even as we are settling slowly into a bit of a routine with you, every day you are growing and changing incredibly. At one month you are starting to smile. You are focusing on our faces and we love it when you gaze into our eyes. It melts my heart! You are moving and squirming and wiggling all the time when you are awake. We call it your “happy awake time” which you usually have after you eat. After that you tend to fuss a bit before you settle down for a nap.

You sleep very well. You usually have two good naps during the day, and then lots of little catnaps. Mostly curled up in your little chair. But you really sleep well when we go walking with you in the Cuddly Wrap. At night you are very kind to your Mommy and Daddy and you usually sleep at least 4 hours, but often 5 or 6! You only wake up once, and then you go back to sleep for another 2 or 3 hours. You have to be swaddled, and as long are you are bundled up nice and tight you are very happy sleeping in your bassinette at the end of our bed.

We have had a few struggles with eating – you and me. But we’re sorting it out together. I know it has been frustrating for both of us at times, but I think we’re finally getting there. You usually eat 5 or six times a day, for 30-45 minutes. You are quite the burpy little man when you are eating though, and I have to stop nursing to burp you every 5 minutes or so to keep you from getting an upset tummy. Now that we’ve figured this out, you are much happier and calmer. Today when we weighed you at the Midwives, you were 7 lbs 13 oz! We are so happy that you are gaining weight, since it was a bit of a concern at first when you dipped down to less than 6 1/2 lbs.img_3941.jpg

You have already had your first cold, and it was horrible to watch you struggle to breathe through your little stuffed up nose. I hated having to give you the saline drops to clear it out, because they made you cry and those huge crocodile tears stream down your adorable little face. Luckily it didn’t last long!

This month both your Grandma’s have been here to visit and they absolutely adore you. They were both super happy to sit and cuddle and snuggle you. Your Grandpa Campbell loves seeing you on the webcam and your Grandpa Ottaway calls all the time to make sure that you are ok and that your Mommy is ok. Your Auntie Gill is also a huge fan. She loves you so much that she is always trying to play with you – even when you’re sleeping! Even your big furry brother Turner seems to be accepting your existence in the house, although he wishes we would go for more walks.

It is very exciting to see you starting to develop personality and character. I can’t wait to see where things go from here. It is impossible for me and Daddy to imagine our lives without you anymore. There have been many ups and downs in the last four weeks while we’ve tried to figure out what you want and what you need. It’s tough – but we’re up to the challenge. As long as you know that we love you with all our hearts, little man!img_3975.jpgimg_3951.jpg
